30 ton Sand Installation. H3xW6xD5m. Goulburn Regional Art Gallery. NSW. Between Heaven & Earth relates metaphorically to creation and the afterlife. The Serpent, being the archetypal ancestral presence of the Earth, delivers the Man, the transitory form between life and death to the Eagle who represents the afterlife and the Great Spirit. Symbolising transition and using the medium of sand it suggests Impermanence. I would like to acknowledge the Ancestors of this Land and all Aboriginal Religious Invocations in all forms for inspiring this work.

Quinta Essentia…
The Medieval Latin term Quinta Essentia meaning ‘Fifth Essence’, denoted a fifth substance believed to exist in addition to the four elements, air, earth, fire and water. Medieval philosophers believed that this ‘Fifth Essence’ was the substance of which the celestial bodies were composed and that it was present in all things.
The logo design combines the elements of the sun, moon, air, earth, fire, water and the ‘Fifth Essence’.

This work took 5 days to complete. The clay/earth combination from this spot was then compacted and shaped, it was then covered with a layer of moss to give the ‘living green’ appearance. Upon completion, a pond of the same length as Gaia was installed beside her, a resting place for the soul, complete with Koi carp and lotus plants.
